Watch me this week on ABC’s smash-hit Secret Millionaire.
On the show, you’ll see James, go “behind the scenes” and learn who is
doing great stuff in the community. You’ll be moved when you hear
and meet these “real life” heroes. http://bigmoneyspeaker.com/
How do you get booked? This is one of the most prevalent concerns of professional speakers. Being able to land bookings is the only way you will be able to define yourself as a great speaker. You learn from the experience, generate income, market your stuff, and hopefully gain fame from it. Without getting bookings you can not qualify as a professional in the speaking business.
Getting booked is a marketing art. It comes from an understanding of the market and effectively using that understanding to your advantage. If you know what your buyer wants you will know how to package and customized your products and materials. Marketing appeal is everything. Thus, to get book, you must appeal to your niche!
How to have that appeal you ask?
Establish yourself as an expert in the niche
People will always prefer to hire experts. Why should they settle to some above-average speaking professional if they can have you, the expert in the field?
Being seen as an expert makes it easier to get booked and you can set high fees! You can do this by having lots of relative experience and also by constantly surrounding your self with people within the niche. In principle, being an expert comes from the initial decision of choosing a niche and sticking to it like glue.
Having a book will also make you more credible and will help you be seen as even more of an expert. An individual who has authored a book about a particular subject is always seen as an authority in that field. That is the public schema; it always has been and you must recognize this.
Additionally, a book or any type of resource you created can also provide another stream of income. They can be sold after your speech to augment your profits in the speaking business.
Have Striking Marketing Materials
Your marketing materials or media kit as some may call, should be striking. Make it professional looking and directly address your market. If your market demands someone who can speak about leadership, adapt your marketing materials to suit that demand.
The whole point here is to get the buyers to think that you are the best person to deliver their needs. With catchy professional-looking materials and the direct-to-the-dilemma approach you can make the coordinator choose you for their event.
Networking is king
Spread the word. Networking is connecting with people that can connect you with other people that may also be able to connect with other people. It is one way and considerably the cheapest way to promote your self.
When you are doing this, it is always better to interact with people within the niche. You can openly express your availability in a conversational way; get contact information and referrals. Build up your database. Your database of potential clients can never be too large.
Have a Web Presence
Just like having a book, having an online presence also helps in building up your credibility. Make your website informative and catchy. Emphasize your expertise and how you can help with your market. Inform the visitors with your products and online resources.
Basically, having a website is like having all the previous tips all rolled into one. With the Internet you are establishing a reputation, marketing your stuff, and also expanding your network via online subscriptions.
Successful motivational speakers are not only highly regarded but also financially privileged. check this: http://bit.ly/gMdHju
People already recognize you as a professional public speaker. So, they already have a notion that you do your stuff well without even considering your mood or time for preparation. They just think of you as a person that can speak well in public no matter what the circumstances. In their eyes, you are an expert at speaking.
So now, what if someone caught you off-guard and told you to speak just a few minutes from now? You wouldn’t have anything prepared except your ability, flair, and finesse.
Would you chicken out and come up with excuses not to speak? Or will you grab the opportunity to get another marketing exposure, get paid and deliver a great speech?
As a speaker you should try to have formulated methods on how to create speeches quickly.
Let me share to you my personal techniques on how to make a speech in 5 minutes or less. Maybe you can use it when last minute situations happen to you.
Firstly, you should get an idea about the audience and their disposition in order to come up with a topic and approach.
Investigate, as much as you can, into who the audience is; what type of people are they? Are they business people, students, or educators? Next, you want to try and anticipate the mood and disposition of the audience. Are they having motivational problems? Are they frustrated with current economy?
Once you know who you are talking to, you can decide your topic and the approach of delivering your speech. Will you be funny, enthusiastic or will you be sober and insightful? What ever it will be, make sure it will be appropriate. This process will just take you a few seconds to deliberate. Or you could just ask the person who proposed you to speak. Usually, audience info and speech topic is given to you straight away.
Now to the exciting part… Making your speech.
Each speaker has his or her own method. Some, if not most, are doing it instinctively. If you still don’t have the knack of making a 5-minute speech, let me share to you a basic trick to develop it. You can implement this and you can build from it and then you will have your own style.
Fundamentally, you must know how to outline your speech. Here is a formula that can make it easy for you.
1. Make a catchy, attention-grabbing introduction.
Start with a quote, amazing fact, statistic, joke, or controversial statement; whatever it is make it interesting. You want to do something unusual and different, so be creative.
After a brief self-introduction, summarize to the audience what you’re going to be speaking to them about. Some sort of like a preview.
2. Make key points
Making three points is adequate. In fact, people tend to remember three points easily. But you can go more than that. Just make sure to be clear.
3. Rephrase your points, quotes, anecdotes, or stories to support your points
Rephrases your points, tell stories, quotes, anecdotes, or provide lessons that are relevant to your point. You can go on and on with these as long as it stays interesting and informative.
4. Wrap it up
Conclude your speech. Maybe, you can give a story that can support all of your points. In the process, you should be summarizing the content of your speech in a notable way.

Have you ever wondered what to do with your charm and knack of speaking in front of people?
Have you ever thought that you could make a profitable career out of it?
Professional public speaking is a vocation for people with a flair in mass communication. A career in public speaking does not just involve skills on stage but includes a lot of off stage skills as well.
Before I go into that, lets touch on how to become an effective public speaker; one that may have longevity and great money-making potential.
A public speaker should have a specialty. You should know what kind of speeches you are most natural and attuned with. There may be a specific topic that you find your self most knowledgeable in. Once you are able to determine your topic consider it your specialty.
In public speaking, your specialty will determine your niche. Your niche is your ticket to public speaking success. Being a generalist will limit your potential. It may seem counter-intuitive but in any business venture, a target audience must be resolved. It is your market. It is where you will draw your inspiration and riches from.
And now, that brings me to the other half of being an effective public speaker. Public speaking is not only about doing speeches; it is also implementing marketing strategies. Delivering speeches is the product and the marketing aspect will sell the product. Poor marketing practices will not get you booked. Your product is pointless if no one is using it.
Great public speakers know how to brand themselves. Are you a hilarious motivational speaker? Brand yourself as a “Motivational Comedian!” are you a near death survivor with something inspirational to share? Label your public speaking persona as “The Miraculous Preacher!”
Those are just simple examples and I know they’re a bit cheesy but you get my point.
Branding enhances marketing appeal and denotes niche expertise. Moreover, you are much easier to recall because of the branding.
Marketing yourself as a speaker must be extensive. You should use lots of marketing materials to help reach your audience. Flyers, brochures, and media ads are just some of marketing tools you can implement. Keep in mind to stay focus with your brand. Emphasize your personal brand in these marketing materials. So that, at first glance, it can be catchy and somehow capable of displaying what you are all about.
Public speaking is an ongoing journey. A lot of learning will take place as you grow with your career. Ultimately, you will become an authority and people will give high regards to your skills and knowledge.
It may take some time to get to that status but you won’t ever get there if you don’t spend the time promoting yourself in the public market. Make the people aware of your skills and offers and just be sure that you can deliver a great performance.
Do you want to motivate and inspire the youth with your motivational speeches? Have you ever wondered how you can connect with them effectively?
Youth speakers need to employ a different approach to connect with a younger, sometimes hard to impress audience. The standard speaking style that works with adults may not very well work with younger audiences.
Apply these basic principles when speaking in front of the youth.
Humor and Enthusiasm
Speaking to the youth requires more enthusiasm and humor from the speaker. These kids and young adults are highly impressionable but easily bored. Being too preachy in an unexciting manner will easily turn them off. Speakers should always try to inject humor in their speeches. Enthusiasm is infectious and it should start with the speaker.
Making the youthful audience laugh is rather easy; easier than you might imagine. They are also more forgiving than expected. Talking to a youthful audience requires a relaxed and easygoing atmosphere. They are more receptive if you can set the right mood.
Learn the lingo and be hip – but don’t try too hard
To connect better with the younger audience, speakers must give an impression that they are well-versed with the younger culture. Speakers must be aware of the lingo of the younger generation so they don’t appear to be an out of touch adult trying to preach.
Remember that trying too hard to fit in can also have adverse effects. The younger audience can easily detect that. The speaker will come off as awkward and laughable. The trick here is to internalize the youth culture but still be yourself. There is no need to speak like them. Just knowing their struggles, desires, and interests is the key.
The reason why younger speakers are booked more often for youth conferences is because the younger audience can relate better to them. Younger speakers’ delivery always appears natural and the audience is easily inspired. The audience can see something they can emulate. They may idolize the speaker because he or she is seen as a successful and fulfilled young person.
Deep inside, the youth want to be motivated
Everyone wants to be motivated. Others may act like they are too cool for that but deep inside, unconsciously, they need something to motivate them.
Youth speeches should basically be motivational. Speakers may talk about tips, techniques, and the how-to’s to achieve success but the bottom line of the content is motivation.
Good or bad, the youth will not really remember the how’s. But they will remember the why’s.
Why should they study well? Why should they say no to drugs? These are the things they tend to remember because the answers to these questions will motivate them! Remind them that they should study well so they will eventually have a great job and become successful. They should say no to drugs because they could ruin their lives if they don’t. That is where the motivation comes from. The methods are just garnishes to your message.
They will not hear you until they know you
Connecting to the youth entails trust. The youth will want something to know about you before you can get them to hear your message. They won’t listen to just anybody. They want someone they can associate with.
Tell them about your struggles and difficulties especially when you were young. They can relate better because in their eyes, you will be no different.
Then tell them how you overcame those adversities. The audience will listen because you have gained their trust and they want to experience your success too.
Do you want to inspire people in seminars and get paid doing it?
Being a seminar speaker is a great way to earn a living. It can be lucrative and you get to inspire people with your stories and experiences. Usually, seminar speakers talk about general topics that deal mostly about leadership, motivation, overcoming trials, learning to communicate, management, and a positive attitude in the face of adversity.
Seminar speakers should have enough life experience to be seen as credible as a speaker. After all, if you’re trying to tell someone how to be more successful in life, it should go without saying that you should be successful and moving forward in your own life.
First, you must choose a topic. Even though seminar speaking can have general topics, be sure to choose a topic where you can closely relate to. If you can relate with your material, speaking will be easy and natural. Natural delivery of seminar speeches will build a positive rapport between you and your audience.
Always be prepared and constantly practice your material. Be professional and continuously seek ways to improve your speeches. If appropriate, employ visual aids to your routines. Visual aids and other speech enhancing tools like slide shows and AV presentations will give you an aura of professionalism.
Create a portfolio of experiences as a professional speaker. You must be willing to work for free at first. Look for small business seminars and business meetings. Let the organizers know of your availability to speak. Share the outline of your presentation and the areas you focus on. Also, share your specialty and why are you qualified to speak in front of the addressees. There are even groups, like Toastmasters, who encourage their members to get up and address the group and then rate your speech in order to help you develop your skill.
Starting small to assess your abilities as a speaker is wise move. Always ask for feedbacks from your audience after every engagement. You can measure your success through the feedbacks. It is in the criticisms that you are able to gauge the worth of your material. In effect, you’ll know if you have to put a hefty price tag on your speaking skills.
Always remember to network with the right people. Asking for referrals will widen your connections and will give you plenty of potential clients in the long run.
Gradually increase your prices. The more experience you gain from your speaking career the better you are getting with the profession. It is a good way to let your niche know that you are valuable. Remember to always market yourself. Keep track of related seminars in your area and send an outline and a pricing sheet to the organizers.
As part of your self promotion, don’t be too finicky with your bookings.
Be willing to give presentations outside of your comfort zone. In doing so, you will only improve your skills and expand your network.
